Batteries

Batteries

Not car batteries, not NiCad, but just the plain AA, AAA, C, D and 9V types.

Which brand do you use and why...

Between Duracell Ultra and Energizer Max.... whichever is cheaper. (Usually the Energizers go on sale more often...)

I've actually been using a set of Duracells (non-Ultra) in two digital cameras, and for some reason they just don't want to die -- I've taken a LOT of pictures even with the flash enabled, and the camera is still reading full power on them. I still am contemplating buying some rechargeable NiMH batteries for the cameras though.

Monster Power batteries. They're pretty stout, and super cheap when in stock at CircuitCity (buy 1 pack, get 1 free).

I'll never buy another Toshiba battery in my life again. That being said, I bought a pair of AAA batteries for my Handspring Visor a few years ago at Narita because I wasted the supply of batteries I had in my carryon during the flight from LAX. $10 for two stinking AAA!!! Never again.

I don't waste money on brand name batteries.

Not so.

Most cheaper batteries are LeClanche cells, using Zn and ZnCl as the electrolyte. True alkaline batteries are more expensive, using a high-denistry KOH hard-gel electrolyte with Zn and MnO2 electrodes.

I will not buy cheap batteries. Their current profile drops too quickly, so in a high-draw device (Gameboy) the batteries die WAY too fast.

Also, be careful about buy rechargables for use in digital cameras. It will appear that the battery is dead, long before the battery is actually dead. Digital cameras are power hogs, and need all the current they can get. Most NiMhydride batteries will not give you 100% current for very long...causing the camera to mysteriously shut off, even though it said you had 1/2 of your battery power remaining.

Actually, it is just the opposite -- NiMH cells DO retain their current capacity throughout most of their charge life -- Alkalines generally don't. One (of many) sites that explains this is located HERE (Most digicam review sites also point this fact out)

This seems pretty true about the use of the rechargables in digital cameras dying without warning, my camera usually dies unexpectedly with the rechargables in.. BUT.... I can take (no joke) more than 10 times as many pictures with the flash as I was able to with regular duracell AA's...so I just make sure to bring some extras if need be.

OK -- I must retract my above statement........ but only slightly. NiMH batteries will generally give you longer runtime, but often, the battery meter will be unreliable. A quote from the site I mentioned in my previous link:

Quote:
The one time when the voltage differences of the two is important is in the case of a device checks the voltage of a battery to estimate the amount of charge left on the battery. Because the voltage of an alkaline battery drops at a very predictable rate it's possible to estimate the amount of capacity left in an alkaline battery based solely on its voltage. (1.5 volts - fully charged, 1.25 volts - 50% charged, 1.0 volts - almost fully discharged). But a NiMH (or NiCd) battery stays at about 1.2 volts until it is nearly completely discharged. This makes it almost impossible to know the amount of capacity left based on its voltage alone. (When a device that's using NiMH batteries indicates the battery is low, it's time to change the batteries now)!

I remember reading a Consumer Reports article on batteries a while back. They noted that the AA "house brand" batteries from Costco (Kirkland) were almost an exact match for Duracell (in life and in the number of little dimples that seemed to indicate they probably came of the same assembly line).

Energizer Photo Lithium for my digicam... they hang in there like nothing else. They're expensive (about $2.50 each), but they last forever and they work well outside in the wintertime.

I haven't bought batteries in a while. Kind of odd. There are only like 3 things in the house that use them. Remote controls (4), my mx700 (which just died, so I need to buy some rechargable NiMH's), and the smoke detectors. I don't have a preference, I usually go with the cheapest known brand.
