i've always thought in the back of my head that cd's never lasted THAT long...especially burned disc. some of my sony discs chip off the data layer...leaving highly colorful flakes everywhere.

i guess that's why i have back ups of back ups

That's why I back up my data using my hard drive(s) instead.

That too but I could try to recover it. I don't think you could do much when the CDs are damage.

have it in BOTH places.

Either way, my CDs and DVDs generally aren't in direct sunlight... and I don't rub them together. So I guess they would be fine.

For maximum longevity, discs should be stored vertically and only be handled by the edges. Don't stick labels on them, and in the case of write-once CDs, don't write on them with anything but soft water-based or alcohol-based markers.

Just like old laserdiscs and "laserrot"

I've got my CD-Rs/DVD-R's in 200-CD sleeve travel things, vertical, but my originals are in their own jewel boxes, stacked in a rack, laying horizontally... I may have to replace my CD rack.

Man, I'm going to be in trouble. In the summer time my room can get to over 100F and I have hundreds of cd's and dvd's stored in the spindles. Guess I have to change something around
