DSL Question

I am moving soon and just found out that I will not be able to get a cable modem at the new place. This means that I am stuck with DSL if I am even close enough to one of the distribution points.

Question is this: I have no desire to get a phone line installed. I use my wireless phone. Can I get DSL without a local phone service? Wireless broadband is seriously $$$. Might just have to netstumble around and see what I can find

Sorry mang... no phone line with service, no DSL...

If you don't mind me asking... why don't you want "basic phone" service? Trying to do it all with a cellular?

I know you weren't directing it at me, but I'm kind of (but not really) in the same boat. When i moved in with PG, we got cable (and modem) but we never got phone service. Why? Because neither of us need it. We don't get that many calls between us, so we just give people our cellphone numbers. It's worked out great, and we have yet to go over our minutes on either of our seperate plans.

that's just us though

Trying to save some cash and do it all with the celly. I have done it for the last 2 years and it has worked out great. Not home all that much anyway (and I am not a big fan of long phone conversations anyway )

Understood... but that's like saying, well... I don't really need cable service since I can watch TV using "rabbit ears"... and I only care about watching "local stations"....

However, you have to have "basic cable service" in order to get Cable Broadband....

Good luck on whatever you do decide...

I dont really understand what you are saying. I have a cell phone and can make any call I would be able to make with a land line (cell = land line). If I only have rabbit ears, I would not be able to get many channels that I could get with cable (rabbit ears < cable). Just dont understand the connection you were trying to make.

BTW: I have had cable internet service without basic cable. Did that cuz I was using satellite. I think that a lot of cable providers are starting to do that since so many ppl are going with satellite.

Ok.. forget the rabbit ears. Let's say you had "satellite service" instead, but no cable and you wanted Cable Broadband...

Just because you have a "cable" connected to your house... you still couldn't get Cable Broadband without cable service... but then you'd say... "I don't need cable service, because I have a satellite"...

I just used "rabbit ears" as an example (which turned out bad I see... ) does this new example express the point any better?

EDIT: Just saw your comment about the cable... Ok... well I guess I don't have an answer for ya then. If cable does that, I guess the telephone company isn't willing to do the same... (just like the cable company wasn't willing to give me a "dial up" account for my laptop and when the cable service wasn't working... but DSL did... so I switched to them)

I'd assume that cable companies did that so that for folks who did go "satellite", then they could still get "some" money by offering Cable internet service only. Funny thing is.. I just called my cable company to confirm this... if you go "Cable internet service only", it costs $57.99 per month... however if you get Cable internet service AND true basic cable they are charging like $2 less for the combo. Go figure...

Either way, I guess you are just SOL as far as broadband goes.

The phone company cannot do the same, for technical reasons. ADSL is assigned by phone number, at least, that's how it was explained to me. No number, nothing you can tie the DSL to.

A lot of people are going straight wireless for their phone. Why not? You always have your phone with you then. For a lot of people, it's more cost effective.

That was understood... however with DSL (as you've pointed out already...) you can't "have your cake and eat it too...)

You don't need cable service to get cable broadband but you definitely need a landline to get DSL.

I think what DF is saying (I may have this wrong) but if you are going to spend $40/mo on DSL you might as well spend an extra $9/mo on a land line. Really, it's not that expensive if you go serviceless and pay per call. It's always nice to have a modem back up during network outages. You may find that you like the land line sometimes (911? )

That's part of it... but on top of that, I'm saying... that with DSL... if you don't have a "land line", you just can't get that type of service period...

So either you suck it up, pay for the land line and go DSL..., pay some RIDICULOUS fees to go "wireless interenet" or lose access to the internet altogether (since cable wasn't an option and even "satellite broadband" requires a phone land line for the "upload" portion of broadband.)

Pretty much, the only other option is to MOVE to another location where cable broadband is available.

We use a few of these for work. A bunch of companies offer the service - AT&T, Cingular, T-Mobile, Sprint. Cost is about the same for everyone - about $80/mo for unlimited access, plus from $0-200 for the modem. Speed is a deal breaker, tho - most of the time they're about 1-2 times as fast as a dial up modem. The fastest downloads I've seen is on the Sprint version, which went up to 20KBps (160k connection).

Thanks for everyones input. I think I am gonna get to know some of my neighbors and see who has a broadband connection so I can see if they want to split the cost of access. I will even buy them a wireless access point since they are so damn cheap now. Time to hit the deals page for an access point and build a directional 2.4 GHz antenna.
