Teach me how to crimp
I'm buying this crimping tool:
and this connector: And I'm trying to make this: So far, I know that I have to strip the 12V line's insulation off and connect each end to the a female connector, however, how do I connnect this? People keep throwing the word crimping around but I have no clue what I am supposed to do and how to use that tool. Can someone give me a step by step on how to crimp (with that tool if possible)? Thanks in advance.

slide the bare wire into the terminal. You then crimp the terminal. Basically youre crushing the metal in a way that it pinches the wire to the point that it cant be pulled out.

Ok... here goes... See the 3 front notches on the crimping tool... one is RED (18 - 22 guage wire), one is BLUE (14 - 16 guage wire), and one is YELLOW (10 - 12 guage wire). The connector that you have above has a "RED" end on it as well... thus I'm assuming that it is an 18 - 22 guage wire connector... First, you strip the wire that you want the connector to attach to. Next you "twist" the wire so that you don't have frayed lines going into the connector. Third, you insert the wire into the open end of the connector and then open your crimping tool and insert both the wire and connector between the first notch (22 - 18) of the crimping tool. Be sure that the wire is firmly inserted into the "sleeve" of the connector. Finally.. once you are sure that the wire is making a good connection with the connector, squeeze the crimping tool to "pinch" the sleeve around the wire... Also, I usually move up the sleeve and pinch it a second time just to make sure that the crimp is tight. After that you're done... simple as eatin' pancakes. Good luck... EDIT: Lookin' at the picture again, I'm wondering... does your connector have the same "fingers" as the ones in the finished diagram? I'm assuming it doesn't... however if it does.... with those you generally "fold" the wire before crimping it. Personally, if your wire doesn't fill up the "connector sleeve" I'd fold it over once before inserting it into the sleeve for crimping... this will ensure that you get a good connection with the metal inside the sleeve.
