My video card, a GF4 Ti4200 128mb (running at stock speeds), has been pooping out on me in games due to the increased heat lately.
It's happened earlier, but I want to be rid of the problem once and for all. I touched the ram, and wow, it was pretty hot! Would ramsinks help with the heat issue? I was thinking of also getting a new cooler for the GPU, but slapping on ramsinks sounds easier. Just how much they would help is another question. Any experience with this? Thanks!! |

If they are running at stock speeds...no. They are most likely damaged or your case has terrible airflow. If you can, get a PCI-slot exhaust fan or make sure hot air is not stagnant around your video card.
Honestly, though...dropping out of games is usually not a heat problem-usually RAM heat problems produce triangle artifacts. Dropping is usually system RAM or drivers.

hmmm... well, I'm not really dropping out of games. It's more like the entire screen turns into wierd rectangles, each about 2mmx3mm or so, and varying in color, mostly white and something else. I recently sent in my card to have it "checked" since it's under warranty, but I think they just cleaned the dust off and sent it back, but still, I hope they did their job and checked the ram too. I'll look into the pci exhaust fan and see how that helps out. Thanks!

actually, if the fan was really dirty, you could have crapped out the core. Or the case temp is just overwhelming the card. Run with the side off and see if it is still an issue.

Ok, I did some slight "mods" to my setup. My case has been open, and I now have a fan blowing onto my video card (took a fan grill and screwed a fan onto only one half of it... basically if your left hand is the fan grill and your right hand is the fan, then with your palms facing you, connect your index and ring fingers. That's how they're connected.) Anyway, so i have a fan blowing onto my video card... and it still craps out after a maybe 10-15 minutes of America's Army.
It works fine on non-graphics intense games like Warcraft3, and before I sent it in, it had worked perfectly with the same setup on UT2k4, but I haven't played that in a while. too bad I can't have winter temps all year round...and not live in antartica. any more ideas? maybe later today, I'll run Detonator Destroyer or whatever it's called, and reinstall my drivers, see if that's causing anything. |

wow. 9800Pro.... just 200.... no..must... resist... ahh!! don't tempt me!!
![]() As nice as that would be, I can't justify it... I'm supposed to be studying now, not playing games. but oh, that would be so nice. But anyway, that's not a "proper" solution to the problem, though it would be nice to do every time something went bad. At least that's what my Dad says every time I tell him, "Just reformat."Do you think it could be my power supply? PC Alert shows that my 12V is sorta iffy.... it seems to like hanging out around 11.80V or so. |
