Olympus C740UZ

I finally got myself a digital camera. Whoo Hoo. It is a fantastic camera, but is certain cases it makes images a bit too bright in areas. Take this one for instance.

Look in the center of the water bottle and on and above the G in SUGAR. Is there a way to do this on the camera so it doesn't make the flash so bright?

There are a few things to look at:
  • You can bounce the flash off the ceiling, but you need an external flash for that (so you can point it up).
  • A polarizing filter may help eliminate glare spots
  • Have a look at the manual for different flash settings - slow sync, 2nd curtain, etc.
  • Set up a tripod & don't use a flash
  • Use other external lighting & don't use a flash

Great Suggestions.

Bouncing the flash off the ceiling is an awesome Idea, I would never think to do that.

The camera does have different flash settings, like second curtain and all that, but the manual does not explain them. Can you give me an idea of what they do?

Is a polarizing filter extra hardware, or can it be done as software?

Thanks again!

I have the exact same camera and really like it.

One of the things you can also do is to lower the flash intensity (in "P" or "A/S/M" mode, go into the main menu. In the first screen, it's the 4th item down (the one that has the lightning bolt like in this picture).

(Yes, I know I have the "Drive" menu selected -- this pic was taken a while back). The Flash intensity menu lets you select anywhere from -2 to +2 (default is 0).

The other thing I highly recommend is taking a look at the huge PDF manual on the Camedia CD that accompanies this camera. It's over 200 pages, but it explains every feature of the camera in full detail.

Ohh cool. I did not bother to open the CD, usually they are filled with junk. I have been reading the silly tiny manual that came in the box

I'm the same way towards the bundled CD's, but a friend of mine told me about the manual and I actually printed it out (thank goodness for having a fast laser printer here).

The only drawback I've found is a higher-than-average amount of image noise in default settings, although usually you can use the Noise Reduction mode to simplify things.

(and in case you were wondering how I snapped that menu shot, I hooked the camera up to my TV Wonder card using the Video Out cable)
