What will be the perfomance benefits of AMD's new 939 pin chip?

It is supposed to support dual channel memory which the other Athlon 64 does not. At first it will not support PCI Express, but probably not for long. Also supposed to be their standard chipset for the 64 going forward so you will be able to expect more upgradability and higher clocked chips in the future. Here is a brief article on it from X-Bits Labs. The article is from January and mentions the launch as due in March, but it has been pushed back until June. http://www.xbitlabs.com/news/cpu/dis...112225451.html

Kind of reminds me of how Intel first pushed out the pentium 4 423 pins and then switched to the 478 pin format. Its way better to wait for the 939 pin AMD format because the boards will be compatible with future editions.

no. for a while they kept the Socket A chipset around, then all of the sudden there liks 5 chipsets out all at once, so I think it's safe to bet that faster CPUs using newer technology will require different chipsets.

ASUS is supposed to have a 939 motherboard out by the end of May and the first 939 chips are supposed to be out soon after that. Early boards will support dual channel memory (possibly DDR500) but not PCI Express yet. I will wait at least until then plus for the prices of the chips to come down. Retail in Japan (usually higher than here) for this board is $165. If I am going to make this big a leap I want it to be fairly current for a while. http://www.xbitlabs.com/news/mainboa...516144104.html

Today, June 1st, AMD announced the release of the first socket 939 processors. How long it will take to get them to market, nobody yet knows. They are not expected to get large numbers produced until the 4th quarter this year or early next year- that is probably when prives will be better. No PCI express yet either. Some boards and processors should start showing up shortly, but not in quantity yet.
