NVidia Cuts Power Minimum for 6800 Video Card

After ATI came out with their new card the X800 and claimed that it actually uses LESS power than its predecessor, the 9800 series, NVidia has backed off its recommendation that systems using their new 6800 video card use a minimum 480 watt power supply. Now they say that a 350 watt supply will "probably" work. They do not remove the requirement for two discrete power connections for the card. The 480 watt power requirement would have meant that consumers wishing to upgrading their video cards to the 6800 would have also had to update their power supply- adding to the cost of upgrading an existing system- putting them at a cost disadvantage vs the ATI X800 series.

Can you say... "Damage Control"?

Slowly I am losing faith in the ability of Nvidia's developers to stay ahead of the curve...

Oh well... big fish eats little fish. BIGGER fish eats big fish.

Have you seen the Hardocp artical about this? They did testing on it and they found that it does not run properly on a single molex. Nvidia is some lying guys.

For people that do not want to overclock, the 480W power supply and second power connector combination is overkill.

There you go.

Actually, if you read the HardOCP article a little further, you'll notice that there is mention of an upcoming firmware update that WILL make the card work at stock speed without the 2nd molex connector. Apparently HardOCP will have that firmware next week, and then we'll really find out what happens.

They need to bring back the Voodoo line. It's their only hope.

Voodoo was part of 3dfx... not Nvidia.

Nvidia had the "TNT" before there was a GeForce.

That is understood... however they never did bring out anything under that technology. More or less they mothballed it.

Plus... for the most part I don't think we'll see "multiple GPUs" on future graphics card just for the cost factor alone...

Dell already sells machines with power supplies that don't meet the specs of the graphics cards included with them. They have some info on their site about it. Basically they say that they have tested the configuration and validated it works, and tell the customer to ignore the manufacturer's recommendation...

I don't know but I bought a Dell 8300, which supposes to come with a 250W PSU. I upgraded my video card to R9800Pro and Dell used a 350W PSU.
