Arrow Dell does it again! New Axim X30 series

18 months ago, Dell released the X5 at $299 for 400MHz, 64MB RAM, and dual CF/SD slot. Comparable iPAQ and Toshiba models sold for $499 at stores like Best Buy.

Today, they released the X30 series. The mid and top level varieties beat the iPAQ's offerings of combined Bluetooth (finally!) and 802.11b, both integrated, by about $200.

X30 Family

My only slight gripe is that Dell did not change the styling from the X3 to X30... but since I've never used an X3, they may have found that simple=good for functionality.

My biggest challenge? Selling my X5 to my mother for $150 (she was looking at $200 bottom shelf iPAQs, X5 still beats them in everything but size), then picking up the X30 wireless 312MHz for $250

well... i tried showing her how to add a contact, and she already got confused. she's no techie... she's just wanting to get up to speed on digital planners, and i won't let her start on an X30 before i do

Si I take it you think that this is a good unit. I've been looking to upgrade my achient less and as such cost less.Handspring Visor but I don't know too much about the Pocket PC systems. Is there really a difference in what these things can do? How do you guys go about comparing these units? What speed shouls a processor be to be useful? How much memory do the Microsoft OS units need? I know the Palm OS models seem to need much. This looks like a pretty good unit for the money, but is it really worth it to get the next model up with the faster processor?

Here's to you, Mrs. Merlinson:

Your doubts about processor speeds aren't uncommon. I constantly run my 400Mhz Axim X5 at 200MHz (power save mode). You can only tell speed differences when you try to play DivX. Hence, I'm not about to pay $100 more for a 624 Mhz processor when a 300+ will work

This fall, we payed $650 x 2 for some iPAQ 5555's (but those have more RAM and a biometric scanner, whoopee). The Bluetooth and 802.11combo is great in my experience of using Pocket PC's with both, but I never dreamed of getting a unit with both on my own till I saw this today.

The main aspects most people look for is a 300MHz+ processor, 64MB RAM, Bluetooth/802.11 (depends what you think you'll get into). The only caveat is that VGA Pocket PC's are coming out by Q4 latest, so screens will actually run in 480x640 instead of the 240x320 they are now. For me, it's not a huge deal, but some people are waiting for it.

For me, Bluetooth is key, since it connects my:
Desktop
Laptop
Mouse
Cell Phone (as soon as the Motorloa v710 comes out )
so last but not least, I'd love this PDA
