Trying to fix a "broken" WiFi card

Last week my step father says, this new wifi card I got is great. I look at hiim and ask...what happened to the other card that I got him. "Oh, it broke last week...I guess it got bent in my briefcase." WEll why didnt you let me take a look at it before you ordered a new one or let me know since I could have gotten you a new one for cheap. "Well, I just ebayed for this one and it was only $10". Where is the broken one? Let me see if I can fix it.

Yesterday he hands me the card. I look at it and other than a crack or two in the plastic, it looks fine. I crack the case, and sure enough nothing looks out of place. I grab an old laptop that I have laying around and plug it in....the led lights up. Definitely doesnt seem broken to me. I download the software...sure enough it reads that the card is fine and is receiving 100% signal.

Now here is the problem....it doesnt seem to be connecting. The ipconfig show that its reading. pinging the router comes back perfect. But when I ping an outside address, I get nothing. ANyone have any ideas? I cant see how the card can interact with the router and not be able to work.

Do you have WEP enabled? If so, does that card have the correct encryption key? Does the router have an "access/block" list? Is that card listed on either?

Also... check to see if you have some other "network card" 3rd party software loaded which is overriding your card. One time, I had a conflict between some D-Link software and a Linksys card... once I un-installed the D-Link garbage, the card worked just fine...

Finally, go into your "Internet Connections" settings to make sure that you are looking for "any" available network.

After all of that, reboot the machine and see if that helps. Good luck.

My wife stepped on the old WiFi card when it was inserted into the laptop and it bent a little bit but it still worked. I ended up replace it with a 54G Belkin card.
