Trouble setting up Linksys Router
Hi, I'm having some trouble getting my linksys befsr41 etherfast 4-port cable/dsl router working.
Ok I have DSL, hooked the modem to the WAN on the router, & then went and hooked up my computer to the router. My comp can't read a connection and says that the network cable is unplugged. If I hook my comp directly to the modem the internet will work. I checked for drivers and linksys says none is required. Think it's the modem? Or are some of my settings wrong? I have XP btw. =/ thx for any help ![]()

What kind of modem do you have? What DSL service as well? (SBC Global maybe?)
Did you set the router for PPoE with your UserID and Password so that it can dial into the service?

The modem is a Speedstream 5100, and yea, my DSL is SBC. How do you set the router for PPoE? =) |

it's basically there on the main page of the linksys if I'm correct. Just log into your router. Usually the default address is http://192.168.1.1. The default password is admin (LEAVE YOUR USER NAME BLANK).
It should look like this ![]() Click on PPPoE and then type in your user name and password. Select keep alive and you should be good to go.

I've had the same router going on over 4 years now never have had any problems.
Sounds like something is not connected right. Try a different cable, what are the router lights showing when you hook the computer to the router? It probally something simple. |

Ok the three lights that are above each port do not light up when I plug the network cable connected to my pc to the router. Can't be the cable, I connect directly to the internet using the same cable. When I connect my Xbox to the router the three lights light up..... ![]() |

Cable may be a cross-over. If your not using the same cable try the known good cable from the Xbox on the computer. |

cool, yup that seems to be the problem. Used the other network cable to hook up to my computer and I was able to access the router. However.. I don't see the option for PPPoE.. =( Here's a screen shot:

Ok... I have seen this problem before.
I think the problem is NOT with the router.... it is with the modem. The Speedstream 5100 tries to log you on automatically and blocks out the residential gateway (the Linksys) from getting access... You need to enter the modem's setup routine (I think you have to go directly from your computer to the modem... remove the router from the chain.) and put in the address 192.168.0.1 directly to the modem... this should bring up the admin panel of the modem. Then you need to find the place where you change the modem to "BRIDGE" mode.... so that it doesn't try to connect to your DSL service on its own. Once you do that, your Linksys should work fine with it. Honestly, the only reason I know this is because about 2 weeks ago, I had the same problems with a Netgear router and a Speedstream 5100 modem... after about 2 hours of futzin' around with it I ended up calling SBC to get the "low down" on this new modem that they are givin' to folks (personally, my modem is a Speedstream 5360...and it doesn't have that "self authentication" bullcrap that is giving your router fits) Try getting to that "bridge" setting and restarting your modem and router... and see if that works. Don't forget to look at the simple things.
Click on the little arrow next to Obtain IP Automatically You will find PPOE as a choice in the pull down selection. ![]() Last edited by billxp : 08-03-2004 at 07:04 AM. |
