How long can a USB cable be w/o signal loss?

I'm thinking of rigging up my classroom with webcams, to capture demos and labs for students that are absent.

How far away can I expect to put them from my computer before I lose the signal?

Also-any recommendations for decent/cheap webcams?

The specifications say 5 meters is the max length unless you use something like this: USB 2.0 Active extension cable

I've used a 25' usb cable for a printer with no problems, but why don't you just go wireless?

I would love to, so I looked at the X10 things; the cheapest wireless camera was $90. Since I will be paying for whatever solution I use, i need to keep it cheap.

(Also, there is a small chance the camera will be destroyed by runaway reactions)
