Intel to Discontinue Pentium 4 Extreme Edition Processor

Intel to Discontinue Pentium 4 Extreme Edition Processor

Intel to Remove 3.20GHz Extreme Edition Processor from the Family
by Anton Shilov
08/06/2004 | 11:56 PM

Intel Corp., the world’s largest maker of microprocessors and supporting logic, Friday announced product discontinues plan for its original Intel Pentium 4 Extreme Edition microprocessor that was unveiled during IDF Fall 2003.

“Market demand for the Intel Pentium 4 processor Extreme Edition supporting Hyper-Threading technology 3.20GHz with 800MHz processor system bus in mPGA478 packaging has shifted to higher performance Intel processors,” the company said it its statement sent to clients.

The last product discontinuance order date for the chip is 19th of November, 2004. Last shipping dates for the chips are February 18, 2005, and July 29, 2005, for boxed and tray versions respectively.

Intel Pentium 4 Extreme Edition 3.20GHz central processing unit is based on the server core known under Gallatin code-name is the first desktop processor from Intel Corp. delivering 2MB L3 cache. The decision to deploy a virtually server chip into desktop lineup was made after the company had to delay its powerful Prescott CPUs into Q1 2004 and necessity to compete with AMD’s high-performance Athlon 64 FX-51 product.

Intel recently accidentally unveiled plans to support powerful processors for Socket 478 platform for another while.
---------------------

I don't know what is going on at Intel. Almost every upcoming chip has been either delayed or canceled. Maybe they are trying to consolidate their product lines.

The P4EE is way too expensive for the performance it provides.

I aggree. Why was it so expensive, anyway?

Intel better get its poop in a group...AMD is beating it down. Only a matter of time before Dell defects to AMD.

I think its because the P4EE is the only processor with a 2MB L3 cache. That along with small production quantities means that the price would be high.

Dell sold AMD for a while back in the day, and they had a parting of ways. Dunno if it was for political or technical reasons, but I don't see them re-introducing AMD at this point... they're selling Intel machines as fast as they can make them.

The only area where I could MAYBE see them introducing another AMD system is a 64-bit server or workstation. Right now they're selling 64-bit Itaniums, which no one is buying.
