New Verizon High Speed connection

http://www.extremetech.com/article2/...09KTX1K0100361

I hope they decide to offer that in my area. 15mb down and 2mb up would really be sweet.

I sure hope SBC tries to meet or beat this.

Verizon's prices, however, may rewrite the compeitive landscape. The company plans to offer plans that offer 5-Mbit downloads/2-Mbit uploads for just $39.95 a month, or $34.95 a month as part of an existing Verizon plan. The mid-tier upgrade, however, will offer a whopping 15-Mbits/s down and 2-Mbits/s upstream for just $49.95 a month, or $44.95 a month as part of an existing package. Prices for the 30-Mbit offering have not been set.

Who else is thinknig of investing in AVNX

Have you heard the news?
Verizon is the first major U.S. telecomm company to begin large-scale deployment of Fiber to the Premises (FTTP). Verizon is now offering FTTP otherwise known as Fios Internet Service in Keller, Texas, the first city in our rollout plans.

What is Verizon Fios Internet Service?
Verizon Fios Internet Service will use fiber-optic cable and associated electronics - instead of copper wires - to directly link residential and business customers to the Verizon network. Fiber-optic systems have been used in telecommunication networks for years, but primarily for long distance networks or for large business applications. But now the Verizon Fios Internet Service Program that we are begining, first in Keller, will extend the capacity, speed, and quality of fiber-optics right to our customers' homes and businesses.

Pricing
Code:
Maximum Connection Speed Installation Charge First 30 Days Monthly Fee Thereafter Up to 5 Mbps/2 Mbps* Waived FREE $39.95/mo Up to 15 Mbps/2 Mbps* Waived FREE $49.95/mo Up to 30 Mbps/5 Mbps* Waived FREE $199.95/mo

Anyone on Cox check their speeds lately?

Not only have they started offering higher speed cablemodem access (up to 5mbps down), they seem to have upgraded all of the existing accounts a bit for free. Seems they're gearing up for the battle.

It still costs about $40 per month and the speed is still depending on how many users are sharing the line.

Yep, price hasn't changed, and yep, speed depends on how many users share the line, exactly like DSL (except DSL's sharing takes place merely 1 level further up).

Well it's being installed in my addition right now - heck techs were working in my backyard this week. BTW I live in Fort Wayne, Indiana - and it's been a big issue around here. Verizon is pushing for full fiber to the home throughout the city.

BTW right now I am getting 3Mbps down with standard $29.95 Verizon DSL, however many areas here are still limited to 1.5Mbps. Over a wireless G/speedboost (108Mbps) network, I am getting about 2600 at my PC.

We are getting to the point that real-world wireless isn't keeping up with what is coming into the house!

BTW with the wonderful folks at Comcast cable (GASP!), we are getting a solid 4Mbps, however for $43/mo *if* you pay through the nose for their horrid cable service. I liked the speed, but the $130/mo high-def digital cable bill was insane... and that was without any movie channels.

FYI: Fiber Optics has crossed the 1 TERAbyte/sec mark in experimental phase. Imagine that, get 1024g's worth of information and transfer everything: movies, music, pictures, pr0n, etc. in one second to another source (ideally, still high in realistic figures). Pretty neat! I'm taking my senior level design course in Fiber Optics as we speak, and have a quiz at 8am tomorrow. Gotta go study, bai!

I'm happy with my 7mbps speeds through Shaw Cable (a provider here in Canada). I'm on their Extreme-i package, which gives me 7mbps downstream / 1mbps upstream. I think I'm paying about $52.95 Cdn for it (it's part of my whole cable package, so I can't recall the exact price off-hand).

More than likely your wireless card's RWIN value is set too low -- use Doctor TCP (found on the DSLreports site) and set your receive window to something like 65535 -- your speeds should jump right up. Then again, with overhead, that 2600 rating sounds about normal for a 3mbps connection.)

What sucks is that while they've rolled out FIOS in our city, they've stopped just short of our neighborhood. I swear, I'd be willing to pay $1000 in setup fees if all I had to was pay the same amount as I do for service via the cable company.
