Need ideas/advice: Music in the bathroom -- my latest project
This ain't exactly Home Theatre... more of a computer speakers kind of question.
I want to have music (other than my singing) in the bathroom/shower. Maybe somehow involve the LAN we have set up, so we can play songs on one of our computers or the HTPC and hear it in the bathroom. I'm trying to come up with ideas ranging from just putting a darn radio in there to having a bathroom PC (wouldn't go that far ) THINK! Please TIA

What about one of these TuneCast Mobile Fm Transmitter .
They work with IPods to car stereos. So what about hooking to the soundcard and having a FM radio in the can? Just a thought...

Now, I would have to run an 1/8" stereo connector from my sound card up to somewhere where I can switch between my speakers and the FM transmitter, right? |

FM tuners usually have a very small range. Airport express can recieve music over your wireless network. Just plug one into an electric outlet and plug that into your shower radio. Otherwise you should probably just hardwire it from your headphones jack of any stereo/computer

If it's in the bathroom, humidty could be a problem. If feasible, just wire 2 speakers in there. It would be too hard to have surround sound since you would need 2 theatres, 1 for the shower and 1 for the can.

When I was in school, I had speakers wired from my receiver to the can. My cheapo recevier has A, and B speaker choices so I could listen to A, B, or both. It made bath time fun. Granted my bathroom was 20 feet from the receiver.

Is there something that takes in two audio wires (1/8" stereo or RCA red/white), has a switch between the two, then outputs to a pair of speakers? What I'm thinking is run two cables into the bathroom (one from each of our computers) and be able to switch to which computer the source is. 1) Does the switch box exist? 2) Is it cheaper to buy 1/8" to RCA adapters then buy really long RCA cables? |

Depending on how much you want to spend you could get one of these.

1. Just about any AV reciever offers such a function. If you aren't using a reciever, just a PC, i'm quite sure these boxes exist. You might be able to use a cheap KVM switch and just use the audio. Though what u are looking for could probably be find at Radio Shack. 2. Go for the long cables. At each point of an adapter or extender you will have some sound quality loss. It is best to keep them at a minimum. |

This has got to be the coolest idea and thread in a long time. I can't wait till I am older, have more money, and can then have a laptop w/ 802.11 to take to the pot with me for poo time..

You can easily make your own switch, just visit radio shack :p
Also, I've toyed with this idea in my mind way back when. I think it would be best if you get a fm transmitter, not exactly the ones that are marketed to use for car use though. Check these out: http://www.hobbytron.net/mini-miniat...ansmitter.html And if something requires batteries, just rewire it using an ac adapter that you can get at radio shack. As long as polarity and voltage matches and it can supply enough current, you're good to go. |
