Who knows about laptop LCDs?

So I have a couple of Thinkpad T21s, and both exhibit the same behavior - I turn them on, and the LCD has a faint pink hue to it. You can't see any white at all, and all other colors have a bit of a pinkish tint. After the machine is on for a while, the pink goes away & everything is fine. If I connect to an external monitor, everthing looks fine, even when the LCD is pink.

Anyone know what causes this? Bad inverter? Backlight problem? Loose connection?

Thanks!

My guess would be that it has something to do with the fluorescent tube for the backlight.

Thanks Seqiro.... anyone else wanna throw in an opinion? I keep seeing conflicting info on whether this is an inverter issue or a backlight issue, and I'd like to know for sure before I start buying parts.

I wouldn't think the inverter would cause that if the problem heals over time. Then again, I have seen where heat can "repair" strange glitches like this before (had it happen with a motherboard that had a slight crack in it -- system was unstable for the first 30 minutes, then it was fine).

Hard to really say overall - though my first guess would be something wonky with the backlight.

My guess is a loose connection! My parents lappy lcd turned blue...and all it was, was a loose connection. That could be it. If you don't mind voiding the warrenty, I'd just check if it's the connection.

I voided my parents...and it works find good thing that lappy has worked far beyond the warrenty date!! phew!

Hahaha! If it was still under warranty, I wouldn't be worrying about fixing it myself!

Thanks for the tip tho.... maybe I'll tear it apart & have a look before I order any parts.

on a side note... how do you dismantle a laptop and is it easy to do? Sites with instructions?

Fortunately, IBM is pretty good about their publications, if you can find where they're buried on IBM.com.
