Same drive is $71.99 at newegg, with free shipping.

Personally I'd go with an NEC drive and you can find dual-layer drives at newegg for around $70. NEC2501A for 8x dual-layer or even the 16x dual-layer 3500A for $87.99. http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProduc...roperty&DEPA=0

DVD-5 - your garden variety 4.7GB discs (whether +/-R or +/-RW)
DVD-9 - your dual layer disc, 8.5GB

if you must buy one now, might as well get a 16x drive. the 16x DL drives are being mass produced now as we speak. most companies that make the 8x drives now are skipping the 12x speeds, and are opting to jump ahead to 16x.
as far as the media themselves, dont expect true 12x or 16x discs anytime soon. good news is that the 8x blank discs are over-engineered to a point that they can burn at 12x (or up to 8x if theyre rated 4x). keyword being "can" - since its not rated at 8x, you may not hit 8x burning speeds.
i have a dual-format 2x NEC drive right now, which i probably will upgrade to the 16x NEC DL drive very very soon (im glad i waited).

But DL burning is only at 2.4X. The 16X only applies to DVD+/-R burning only.l

You could find them but I definitely won't pay $10 for it.

No, it's not a rebadged lite-on. I'm sure you'll be happy with the NEC because it is a great drive, but also, is very compatible with different media.

and unlike the great lite-ons of the CD-burning era, the DVD burner lite-ons these days dont necessarily rank high among the better DVD burners around.

the 8x is fine - as i mentioned earlier, you'd be hardpressed to find any TRUE 8x media thats CHEAP anyway, much less the 16x blank discs. with the current 4x discs mostly OVER-engineered, you never know - you may hit 8x burning with them.
