Logitech MX900 back and forward buttons work in Firefox!
Kind of both hardware and software, but whatever
 I just reformatted my computer and did NOT install the Logitech SetPoint software. Installed Firefox 0.9.3 and guess what, forward and back buttons now work! I didn't see an update post on this (from Cheesy or anyone else), and maybe it was just 0.9.3 that fixed it, but I thought it would be worth a shot for anyone with this mouse

I have the MX700 and have always been able to use the back/forward buttons with Firefox (since 0.91). I also don't have the Logitech-specific drivers installed.
