900,2.4,5.8, why?
I wish more stuff used the 802.11a frequency..5.8 right? Why is there such a GLUT in the 2.4Ghz band? Is 5.8 stuff more expensive to make? I mean it's just another region of the radio spectrum right?

I think the range is shorter with the 5.8GHz units.

Yup - 5GHz is shorter bandwidth, therefore it has a shorter range. You can get the same speed as A & the range of B using 802.11g, so this seems to be the most popular choice.
However, in areas of high interference on the B/G band, it might make sense to use A. http://www.netstumbler.com/2004/04/0...e_for_802.11a/ |

One of the main problems with an "A" network is also it's ability to penetrate solid objects (i.e. walls, floors, ceilings, etc..) This tends to shorten it's effective range as well.
Now in an "open warehouse" or "outdoors with no barriers" situation, A networks most likely operate fine. ![]()
