Firewire Question

I am going to be transferring some digital video from my miniDV camcorder tapes to my PC so I can burn them onto CD's/ I need to get a firewire card but don't know which type to get. Should I get the regular 400mbps cards or the newer generation ones that go at 800mbps? I have a PC 1.4ghz pent4 with 512 ram. I plan on using adobe premier. The regular 400 ones, I can get the PCI card plus cable for $19. Yeah it's a no name brand. Witht the 800mbps, it's like $80 just for the card. Any suggestions?

Just get the 400. The cam prob is just 400. When 800 perriferals become more standard in sure the add-on cards will come down in price.

Does it matter what brand card and cable I get? I found this combo for $20 from CompUSA. The brand is Startech or something like that.

The cable doesn't really matter.

I got a Belkin Firewire card for my home machine and some cheapie PCMCIA card for my laptop. Performance is the same. I'd say the brand of the card doesn't matter.

Yep. It'll either work... or it won't work.

There really isn't an improvement one brand over another.

there are not any consumer fw800 camcorders on teh market yet, so the added speed willnot help you any in this task anyway. Go with the 400 as tated above and upgrade as prices come down
