using 5.1 speakers similar to 2.1?

is there a way to have a 5.1 system of speakers run like a 2.1? i dont have much room to put the back speakers, so i was wondering if i could set it up so that the 4 satellites are in front

You don't need the redundancy and the sound will be off. Can u just remove the 2 back speakers? Then u can setup a 3.1 (center speaker) or 2.1.

If you don't have the room for a 5.1 speaker set up... I'd just stick to a 2.1 or 3.1 like verve recommended...

As a secondary choice... how much room do you have? Is mounting the back speakers on a wall a possibility? What about speaker stands?

How small is this room again?

Usually recievers will have separate volume controls center and surround speakers. You could just turn those off. Downmixing audio would probably be dependant on your reciever, it might work if you turn off any Dolby decoding and just stick with stereo mode.
