DVD Burner

Can someone recommend me a DVD burner.

To be specific on what I'm looking for...I want to burn videos from my computer so it can play on my DVD players. I budget is about $100 less for a good/excellent burner at this price.

I know I'm suppose to look at DVD±RW if I want to burn and play dvds on my dvd players. But I'm not quiet sure about that so I can't really do research on it myself.

Second recommendation for the Pioneer -- friend of mine bought it, and is really satisfied with it so far (although he hasn't tried burning at 16x due to the media he has).

Looks like Anandtech reviewed it too (and it actually unseated the Plextor PX-712A from their top pick for DVD recorders).

(If only I had waited a few months before getting my Plextor PX-712A.)

How about this Plextor for $78.29 + tax and free shipping? Black version is also available.

WOW! Has this drive ever come down in price (and yes I know it's a $30 Mail In Rebate that gets it that low). Looks like a local computer store here is overcharging us Canadians on this drive still. Luckily I bought mine at Costco during a sale that brought the drive to $200 Canadian -- which wasn't bad two months ago.

I was in the same position as you until yesterday. I did a little research and ended up ordering a Lite-On 812S (little over 100 bucks at Newegg including 50 8X +R's). No dual layer burning, but the media is too expensive right now anyway. By the time prices come down and the write speed goes I'll probably pick up another burner. I've heard that there's non-official firmware that can up the 812S to an 832S (dual layer capable), though I doubt I'll do it, but it's nice to know this model has the potential.

Speaking of firmware, I also opted for Lite-On because it seems like they update their firmware fairly often. Hopefully I won't have to worry too much about not being able to use certain media with the 812S since they just came out with firmware upgrade a bit ago that allows it to recognize more media.

I also looked at the NEC 2510A, but noticed quite a few people said it had reading problems.

VideoHelp helped me make my final decision.

Oh yeah, lastly Lite-On offers a utility that allows you to mark DVD+R's as a DVD-ROM instead of a DVD+R in case you have an DVD player that's finicky about what type of media it'll accept.

The Pioneer drive that I listed above also writes DVD+R's as DVD-ROM by default.

Well it looks like it has jumped up in price a little... however NEWEGG still has it for $95 after rebate as well (with $4 shipping): http://www.newegg.com/app/viewproduc...C-pr1c3grabb3r

I have the NEC 2500 and it's flawless. I've read good things about the Pioneer line. I would get dual layer top of the line of either of those.

sony's IMO are generally over priced. Liteon fans seem to be pretty zealous but I personally think their products, while maybe perfect in performance, just seem built poorly.

AGREED 100%. I've had no less than 4 LiteOn drives tank on me, and know several friends of mine in the same situation. I personally will NOT buy another LiteOn drive for a while until things hopefully improve. This was one of the reasons I went with Plextor (I wanted to see what all the hype was about).

Umm... Plextor is FAR from being "unknown" in the burner business... They've always been near the top.

Unfortunately, that listing is kinda old now... as the Pioneer stated before has taken the top spot from the successor to the PX-708A (the Plextor PX-712A).

Don't get me wrong.. I have a Plextor 708A in my system right now... but if you are spending dollars today, the Pioneer is a better value and faster unit.

The Pioneer? As far as I know, there isn't a hacked firmware that will enable bitsetting for DVD+R or DVD-R.
