question about using a hd with 8mb buffer
i just got a new wd special edition with the 8mb buffer, if i put it on as a master and connect my 40gb with a 2mb buffer on as slave...will they both run at 2 mb?

Nope... the cache on the HD has nothing to do with the speed of the IDE bus that it is running on.
The HD with the larger cache just can load more data into it's temporary data buffer than the smaller cache drive... thus, it can access the info just a wee bit faster out of it's cache while the smaller cache drive has to go and get more info directly from the platter to write to the cache.
