Dell Says "Yes" to AMD Once Again, but Speaks No Details

One of a few companies who do not use microprocessors from Advanced Micro Devices, Dell Inc., said it had been considering AMD’s chips for gaming, workstation and server computers and was likely to add appropriate product lineup into its family of systems, however, remains tight-lipped over any details for such plans.


“My guess is we’re going to want to add that [AMD] product line in the future…They’ve been getting better and better. The technology is better. In some areas they’re now in the lead on Intel. That is what is interesting us more than anything,” said Kevin Rollins, Dell’s CEO in an interview with InfoWorld web-site.

Historically Dell has been using microprocessors only from Intel Corporation. However, with the availability of AMD Athlon processors in 1999 and 2000, rumours about Dell’s presumable intentions to get AMD-based computers on the market became very intense, but the real condition of the things is that there are still no computers from Dell with AMD chips inside. As a major customer of Santa Clara, California-based Intel, Dell reportedly receives some favours from its main chip partner, therefore, this is quite natural for Dell not to use processors from other makers. Moreover, being a company concentrated mostly on corporate and SOHO markets Dell once said that the demand for AMD central processing units from its clients is not too strong. Now the company cites AMD’s inability to supply the PC giant enough chips for desktops and believes it is more likely to deploy AMD’s chips into server, workstation and gaming desktop spaces.

“If we basically sucked up all of AMD’s [manufacturing] capacity it would not be enough. They don’t have enough capacity for us to use them on the desktop. For us, fundamentally, AMD is much more interesting in the server, workstation or gaming arenas,” Mr. Rollins explained.

Some analysts believe that all of Dell’s comments in regards adoption of central processing units from AMD are aimed mostly to win more concessions from Intel Corp.. Given that Dell discloses no details about its computers with AMD processors inside, such opinion is only fueled more and more.

AMD has inked deals with companies like IBM, Sun, HP and Gateway and a number of others so far

Everything is wrong with Dell! Horrible customer service! Horrible systems that die. So when the damn horrible system dies the horrible customer service doesnt take care of you.

My 8100 was sent in to service 4+ times for the same problem. Finally they tell me they are giving me a new system. I think great, a new computer that wont have any problems. They give me a freaking 8200 refurb that doesnt work right from the start and doesnt have the upgraded video card I paid extra for. The 8200 computer went in and out 3+ times and finally they replaced the Mobo/Processor. They did finally sent me a replacement vid card
but I never installed it because the computer was so messed up already. (On a side note, I recently ran across that card and saw that it was only half the memory of the one I paid for. I never noticed that before.)

When they replaced the Mobo/Processor, I told them that this was BS I paid for a new system, they sent me a defective broken one, then they send me a used system saying that it was the replacement since I had used my computer and they were equivalent which turns out to be broken to the point where they now had to replace the damn Mobo/Processor. I wanted a brand new replacement and that this was complete and total crap. A year after Dell had my money I still didnt have a computer that worked and had been given the shaft time and time again. I even bought the extended warranty before it expired because of all the problems that I was having and planned on keeping my system.

Dell refused to replace it and finally offered to buy the system back while subtracting the depreciation. Someone said that this showed good CS since they took it back, I say it shows how poor they really are since they didnt make me happy and never gave me what I paid for. On top of that although I "had" the system for that time, it was never functioning right and I should have gotten all my money back. They screwed me on returning the warranty too and it took me several months of arguing with them and finally threatening to sue before they even gave me part of what I was owed.

This is why Dell sucks...and no matter how many Dells I bought prior to this one, I wont buy another one. Its been difficult in one sense because of all the great deals on the 8400 recently and the fact that our Dell Desktops have been relatively trouble free but its the principle of the matter.

I had problem with the Dell PowerEdge SC400 and Dell sent a tech out to replace the CPU but its CS does suck.

Hmm...on the other hand, my 400SC is the first computer I've owned that I didn't build since 1994, and I LOVE it. It's fast, quiet, rock solid (even when I screw around with the hardware/cpu/mem).

I believe you about the customer service though, since most of it is farmed out of India.

They come with too much **** preinstalled that is running in the background. You dont even need 1/3 of some of the apps they install that are running in the background.

First thing I do anytime I buy a PC is re-install the OS. Not just because I like to dual-boot with Linux, but cuz I like to be in control of what is running in Windows. (Well, as much as one can be...)

Personally, I have had great luck with Dell compared to the rest. I like to build my own, but at work we use Dell and my PowerEdge servers and PowerVault NAS units are all pretty damn solid. No failures in ove- ~@~@##

Though I understand your anger... my experience has been totally the opposite.

My Inspirion 8100 is still running strong with no problems... and I've helped numerous friends purchase Dell systems through the various deals and I've NEVER heard any problems from them either (and they will call me first as "tech support" versus using their paid for warranty service).

More or less... for the value, the Dells just can't be beat, although I do agree that the first thing I do as soon as I get one is re-install the O/S without all of the bloatware... Do that one thing, and most likely you'll have a piece of equipment that you can count on.

i'm surprised my inspiron 4100 is still alive and kicking (relatively). sure, the HDD failed after 2.5 years. the dvd-rom won't read dvds anymore. the tv-out never worked (i think, but i never tried until after the warranty ended). the battery doesn't hold a charge anymore. but no dead pixels in the monitor. still does what it needs to do. i wanna buy a mac laptop next in a few months though.

I buy Dell for my company & have had GREAT luck with them. Customer service is better than IBM, in my experiences. Of course we're considered a large business account so our support is still in the states.

I have Dell systems that are 6+ years old & still running strong. Slow, but strong! I always recommend Dell to my friends & family & they all seem to have pretty good luck with them as well.
