Can i change my motherboard without reformatting??
IM getting my new asus a7n8x-e deluxe tmrw and i was wondering if i could change to it from a chaintech 7njl6 without having the reformat. Should i just uninstall all of the drivers that pertain the the 7njl6? they are both nforce2 ultra's so i don't think there should be a major problem.
thanks ![]()

You should be fine without a reformat. However, WinXP may not start since it *may* want to change the drivers for the hard drive access. Since they are both Nforce2 boards, this is unlikely, just be prepared with your WinXP disc in case you need to repair the install.

Let us know if it works, because I would like to do something similar to a friend's computer. I figured that was a major hardware change and therefore XP would not allow it without getting a new registration number.

The last time I swapped a hard drive containing a working copy of XP into another computer I had to do a repair install and reactivate via phone.
Closest I've ever been to your scenario, FWIW...

i've swapped out a mobo, and if i remember correctly, you're going to have a loss...If i remember correctly, i didn't "have" to reformat, but i did because when you start it up, it's gonna ask you to install an OS, and when you do, you just end up installing an OS ontop of the old one...totally messed up all the program files and such...so I just ended up doing a clean install....
maybe that was just me, but then again, i'd advise you to back up any important docs and such first.... |

The important thing is that your motherboard and harddrive controller drivers should be the same, since both boards are Nforce2. I've swapped out two i875 boards and one i865 in my current setup and didn't need to reformat (or install any additional drivers) since the chipsets are the same.
