Recommend a mobo on the cheap...

I have inherited a Gateway Oxnard Select 1100 PC, 1.1 Athlon, 128MB PC133 RAM. I think the mobo has an intermittent open in it somewhere. The person I got it from decided to go with a G|A Dell deal at my urging rather than pay me to try to make chicken salad out of chicken droppings.

I can buy a Gateway replacement mobo on eBay for $35 + shipping. It's standard ATX. This particular box has already had the Gateway mobo replaced once, so I am not crazy about the idea of buying another.

Recommend a cheap replacement that will use the same processor and memory. I'm gonna get this pig going and put Linux on it to play around with. I don't care about bleeding edge performance, and I don't want a board that'll require DDR memory 'cause I don't have any lying around anywhere. I don't want to spend a penny more than I have to, which means reusing all other components.

What brands (beside PCChips) should I avoid at all costs? I want something I could find for $35 or less on eBay or via surplus. If you have something lying around that would foot the bill, PM me if you want to get rid of it.

What sayeth you, O tightwad geek gurus?

Set yon box on fire and be heretofore done with it-th.

Seriously, if the componets are the same components that come from Gateway, I would get the $35 gateway board. GW comps of that age are notoriously hard to upgrade, and you're bound to hit some wierd compatibility problems. That being said, I tend to go Asus, Abit, or MSI for mobos.

I built two computers using a Gigabyte GA-7DX. Unfortunately, it uses DDR memory. But 128 MB of DDR memory can be gotten pretty cheap on pricewatch. You could probably get the MB on EBay for $20 shipped and get the memory for $15-$20.

From what I have been noticing, SDRAM is now more expensive than DDR RAM, so you could possibly sell it here and break even. BTW, I have a PcChips setup which has given me no problems for 6 years.

I went ahead and bought the MSI ms6738. It is a little more than I wanted to spend, but it has some upgradability...

We'll see how it works out.

It'll be fine for what I want it for. What do you mean by "a little low"? Speed wise, or capacity wise? Please elaborate...
