noisy videocard

Right now i have a radeon 9800pro. it's noisy as hell. it's pretty much the only noisy thing in my system. can anyone recommend a equally performing card that is decently silent? Also, this is going in my shuttle, so it has to fit in one pci slot and the card has to be agp.

bonus points to you if you can help me out.

Don't get rid of your card. Get an Artic cooling VGA silencer v2 or v3 (best) or ATI silencer (good). They are very quiet and allow for better than normal overclocking of your R9800P. You should be able to find then for <$20 shipped.

http://www.svc.com/cardcooler.html

Besides, all stock VGA fans fet noisey after a year or two-they are too small and spin too fast.

Yeah, I've heard the silencers are good. Got a 256mb 9600xt on the way with Arctic cooling, copper ram sinks, and a VGA silencer on it. Can't wait to get it...

um.... by one pci slot, i mean the agp slot, and by fitting in the agp slot, i mean there's no more space beyond that.

Bires, it looks like some of those fans and silencers are designed specifically for different video cards. For example, the v2 and v3 seem idealized for the NV 5900 series.. Can we use this on the R9800s as well? I have an AIW 9800 and would love an alternative to the stock cooling.

I imagine the stock fans then have to be removed with the addition of one of these? Thanks in advance.

The ATI silencers are designed for specific cards, but he VGA silencer is designed for all of the Radeons 9500 on. Google it to be sure, but seeing where the TV reciever is, I don't see any issue with the v2 (the one I own) or v3 being used on R9800P

Buy.com has a GF6600GT AGP on sale for $180 AR and coupon. Check www.techbargains.com for details.

Again...every single video card HSF I've owned has become noisey after a year or two.

well you never know how many slots it will take up. some are supposed to only take up 1 slot, but there's a clip on the bottom that blocks a slot underneath too.

mine blocks a port for a special 1934 fire wire 2 big 1 small inputs
arg! thats one disapointment by Gigabyte™ lol! i know they have lots of other dumb placements for stuff on their mobos.

i have the same fan problem, it seems to be a curse on me!

rofl no
my card is just one slot. however, i'm sure there could be an alternative way to mount the card without the huge blue clip that takes up a whole slot itself.
just in case you want to replace the fan, here's some nice alternatives.

if it's made by Asus it should come with a program called asus smartdoctor. It came with my 9600xt and basically what you can do is either

A. clock the fan speed to whatever you want or
B. Use an intelligent system which turns up the fan speed when the chips get hotter. It's pretty neat. The GFX card was the loudest part of my system until i started using this program. Now it's silent along with the rest of my computer.

pretty neat though you can hear it spin up when i'm playing HL2.

gl with the decision.

one random note i've noticed about my noisy vid cards.... they get noisier as it gets dustier. I've used compressed air on the fans of my vid cards, and all of a sudden, my computer gets silent again... might wanna give that a quick try.
