Post Dell Number-One PC Maker Again - HP Gives up

Dell Number-One PC Maker Again
Dell was the number-one PC maker again in the fourth quarter of
2004, edging out perennial bridesmaid HP for the top honors. Dell
snagged 15.9 percent of the worldwide PC market, compared with 15
percent for HP. Shipments at the PC giant rose 21.1 percent year over
year to 8.8 million units. That isn't too shabby when you consider
that average PC sales growth for the quarter was about 12.3 percent.
For the year, Dell sold 31 million PCs, up 23.1 percent from 2003. HP
shipped 27.6 million units, up 12 percent. IBM, Fujitsu, and Acer
rounded out the top five.

HP to Walk Away from Market Share, Embrace Profits
And speaking of market share, HP is tired of chasing it. This week,
HP revealed that it will stop trying to grab market share at all costs
and will instead concentrate on improving profitability. The decision
comes after a bruising 2 years of losing out in the market-share race
to chief rival Dell and having nothing to show for it besides lower
profits. But the decision was met by cheers from financial analysts,
who say that HP's new tactic is the right thing to do and will lead to
slower but more predictable growth. Frankly, the PC's current
economics make it difficult for companies to eek out a profit because
the steadily declining cost of PCs favors only Dell, which makes the
majority of its profits on low-cost direct-order sales. HP, because it
sells mostly through resellers and retailers, has a built-in
disadvantage when competing with Dell on price. Whether the change
will help HP remains to be seen.

DUH, I guess the purchase of COMPAQ didn't really work out, like some analysts originally stated.

As I have said over and over, more thna 70% of mergers fail to deliver any shareholder wealth. There are already talks about them spinning off printers. Carly is a moron that definitely wasn't ready or qualified for that job.

If I remember correctly, either one of the original founders or THE founder of HP was against the COMPAQ merger. I wonder if the press will ever exonerate him.

Nah, that'd piss off the bankers who wouldn't do interviews for the papers to drive more sales while showing off the ego-inflated analysts who drive irrational investor expectations all the while being pimped by those same companies.

That was teh suck... if you ask me.

Pretty much BECAUSE of that I wouldn't recommend an HP machine... given the history of SUCKPAQ.

HP should just stick to what it does best... printing and imaging. I'll still support them in that line.

I think it's because of "I got a Dell Dude!" ad.

Didn't Dell Dude go up the river for drug possession?

Well I l bought a Compaq notebook a couple of months ago and love it. No problems with it, and runs like a dream.

A friend of mine just bought an HP notebook... well he hasn't really seen it yet. He had it for 20 seconds before he had to call tech support. Sent it in the next day. Its been in for repairs for 2 weeks now. They finally sent it back, after sending it to the wrong support center, and it still doesn't work. Finally he listened to me, and asked for a new power adapter. We'll see.

HP's customer and tech support leaves something to be desired. It sounds like they don't have a central customer support system, so no one knows what's going on, and they have no way for Customer Support to talk with Tech Support directly. Not to mention the number of times he was on hold with CS in India and they flat out hung up on him.

I'm really pushing him to file complaints. BAH!!!!
