Help with new system
I'm looking at doing a little upgrade from a p4 to an amdxp or amd64 system.. my p4 will likely be dead here w/in the next couple weeks so i'm in a time constraint now.
I'm looking at the following for a chipset.. does anybody have any comments on the following. Or suggestions as to better/cheaper solutions. I'm on a HUGE money constraint, and will be slowly adding to this system for a while.. probably going to get the mobo and processor then work on the other things as money alots. 754 chipset or 939? ideas.. comments please? (probably around the 643000+ or XP3000+ range) Gigabyte GA-K8NS (ultra 939) nForce3 Gigabyte GA-K8NS (754) nForce3 i guess the question is more on the lines of 754 or 939?? cost is more of an issue, unless there are more distinct advantages of one over the other thanks in advance ~Kyle's CPU Fried

939 since it supports dual channel and it will last longe than 754.

i agree... the 939 with dual channel really flies, im not sure what benchmarks are but i think there is a definite quicker 'feel' to it when using photoshop and sony vegas than i experienced on the 754

mkay, sounds like my best bet.. how bout the motherboards? anybody recommend a decent (not too expensive) mobo?? (like 75--100 range at the most)
the 754 is now outta the question, as with the 754 mobo I posted earlier about as I just noticed it only has 2 internal fan connectors and sorta lacks the dual channel 'feel' as Lemon would say. ...well it looks like via pricewatch, the cpu is gonna run about $190? And a motherboard w/ pci-express starts out around 120? this puts me about 60bucks over my ideal $250 I'd sorta like to have the option of pci-e(x), I'm planning on making this system last for the rest of college for me, and will be upgrading from the old $hit components that i currently have to new things as time goes on, and money comes in. Since i'll be using it for a while, I guess i'd sorta like to just have the option.. in the case that somewhere down the road I find a cheap deal on pci-x cards or something. I'm wondering why the proc/mobo combos are able to pull the price down to like 250'ish as opposed to my 310?? that's a huge gap... any suggestions on what's better/different etc. /edit: I know this is a hardcore n00b question, but I totally missed out on the whole pci-x craze. Do they not make mobo's that have an AGP port, as well as pci-x support????? I have to justify this all to the parents, and if I have to spend an extra 50 bucks it's not a big deal, but i'd love to find the setup for ~250 if possible.. anyone.. deals... rebates etc??? thanks, ~Kyle Last edited by shocky123 : 02-01-2005 at 10:24 AM. Right now if you want a PCI-E option you're stuck with the nForce 4 chipsets. Those boards run anywhere between 100 and 250. Asus is the best IMO, but you will pay for it. Gigabyte makes boards in your price range.
As for AGP/PCI-E simultaneously, I know of no boards that do this at the present time.
