new dvd burner and dead motherboard

so swampfox sent me a new plextor dvd burner

i put it in last night and i think my motherboard died along the way. here's the score, any advice would be appreciated.

the system had (before the new burner) 1 80gb drive, 1 200gb drive, dvd burner, cd -rom.

primary drive is the 200gb with the cd-rom slaved, secondary drive is the 80gb with the dvd burner slaved. the 80gb drive has a full install of windows XP from an old computer that I never got around to deleting when i moved the drive.

all i did was to swap the old burner for the new burner. when i powered up the motherboard would not post. i reset it and the board still wouldn't post. i switched the power off and back on and the board posted. funny thing was it booted from the 80gb drive. realizing that i'd not set the new burner to slave, i pulled it out and changed the jumper. i put it back in and powered up, the motherboard posted, system booted from the 200gb drive, and the windows menu came up. i picked my account and the system locked up before loading.

i reset the computer and the motherboard wouldn't post. i switched the power off and back on and the motherboard posted. here's the really odd part...windows would try to load and i could see, very faintly, the winodws logo on the screen. it looked like the monitor was dead and that's as far as it got.

i changed the IDE cables, just in case. after that the motherboard wouldn't post. finally i started disconnecting drives until i had just the 200gb drive...still no post.

that's where i'm at now. i think the board is dead. is there anything else i should try?

Have you tried a different power supply? That would be my next troubleshooting step personally. I have had several die on me already.

no, i've not tried that. i can, but i doubt that's the case b/c all the drives fire up and spin, fans spin, and cold cathodes come on.

Sometimes it depends on your overall current draw or the output to the motherboard supply may be damaged. I had one power supply that would run a slower processor/motherboard just fine, but when I connected it to another system that had a faster processor/motherboard combo, it would exhibit odd symptoms like what you were describing. This power supply had run the higher speed system for about 6 months until it started suddenly acting strange. A power supply replacement fixed the problem and it ran fine afterward (still does).

Give it a try, see what happens.

Are you sure the jumper on the new Plextor is set correctly?

If it were me, I would install the primary hard drive on the primary IDE as master, then the new Plextor as master of the secondary IDE, after disconnecting the other CDROM and hard drive and see what happens.

Also, when I change burners or CDROMs, I go into SAFE mode and find out what burners or CDROMS are listed. I delete the ones which I no longer use and I make sure that the assigned drive letters on the existing ones are correct. But I don't think this is your problem.

i've stripped it all the way down to just the primary drive and still no post. in fact, i've taken all the drives out and all the RAM out...no post. if i'm not mistaken, i should get a post error with no ram installed.
