9800se good upgrade??

i am thinking about getting one of these cards for 130 and ocing it to 9800pro status to replace my damn fx5200 which is slow as bloody hell.

would this be a good plan?

would i see a noticible difference? thanks

Yes it is. Yes you would.

If you can only spend $130 a R9800 is a great way to go. Be sure you have good cooling on the card, since you will be overclocking.

BTW: On my 3.0G P4 and R9800P I get 59fps average on the CS:Source stress test and FRAPS tells me I get >30fps on HF2 with 4X FSAA. Very smooth. I love this card!

Artic cooling VGA silencer. I also got some copper ram sinks while I was at it (although I doubt they actually do anything).

http://www.svc.com/cardcooler.html (the VGA silencer was replaced by the ATI silencer)

I would rather get the 9600xt than the 9800se though.

why?

The XT is pretty much maxxed out, while there is a good chance this late in the game that an SE is really an underclocked standard card (or even pro).

Buy.com has the
XFX GeForce 6600 GT 128MB Dual DVI AGP 8X Video Card
on sale for $219 - $25 exclusive rebate = $194 with free shipping.

Use this $15 coupon (new customers) to bring the price down to $179 with free shipping.

Great benchmarks for the price.

For 50 more bucks your getting something that mops the floor with the 9800se.

I agree with bachviet. I remember a review months ago that showed that the 9800se was about the same as the 9600pro in gameplay performance.. The 9800se is not just a crippled 9800 with half the pixel pipes, but it also has half the memory bandwith, which essentially makes it a 9600.
When I go looking for a video card the first place I look for a good deal is in Newegg's refurb section.

I believe the 9800se is a 128 bit video card comparing to the 9800pro, which is a 256 bit card.

yeah, that would be good especially since they're getting cheap. the 9800pro is even more popular, that's a well respected card. im sure the se version will rock.

ok i ended up getting a 9700 pro for 103 off ebay. it was too risky to get a 9800se and softmod it because if it didnt work i had a card that worked ok but not great. the 9700 pro has all 8 pipelines enabled, fast memory and beats the 9600xt and 9800se on all benchmarks

i cant wait
