Someone Please Stop the Hissing!!!!
I have a Gigabyte K8NS Pro MB and am using the integrated sound. Realtek ALC850. For the past couple of days I've been getting a terrible hissing noise from the speakers. I've uninstalled the drivers, loaded the most recent, even changed the speakers (finally tossed on a set of the Dell's from Woot...all to no avail.
Would anyone have a suggestion (other than turning the volume down Thank you. |

I'd be interested in hearing if anyone has a suggestion too cuz I have a set of Altec Lansing speakers with a subwoofer. When i turn off the pc I have to turn off the surge protector too so that everything is off because that darn hissing will keep going on even though the computer is off. Yes I turned the volume all the way down, but there's no "off" button for the speakers. However, I do like the sound though so it's not a big problem, just an annoyance.
p.s. WHAT A CUTE BABY! |

This is likely a problem with the grounding of the computer. The situation occurs simply because a speaker's job is to amplify the electrical signals that it receives via it's metal plugs... While your speakers are setup to idealy amplify nothing when it receives an input of 0V, when the computer is off, and not perfectly grounded, then it amplifies these small invariences. Test it out, unplug the speaker jack.. turn down the speakers and rub the jack against the back(back-plane...not anyother device) of the computer, it'll show up nice and loud. Unfortunately the only real fix is via expensive speakers/hardware and/or a really nice outlet? But yeah, that's what happens, as far as hissing, I'm assuming you're referring to what I've been talking about. If not, I have no clue what would be the cause. However, I am recieving the K8NS-Ultra939 in a couple days, and I will be sure to see if I have similar issues and report back.
Good luck, ~Kyle

Integrated sound is known to have this problem. Companies such as DFI have put the onboard sound jacks onto a different riser with extra filters to prevent this.
I'd check to make sure the mobo is grounded properly, but I think its just a problem with the overall quality of onboard sound. Also check out to see if the gain is set right in the audio properties. LK |

Go buy a sound card and disable the integrated sound...
You can get a SB Live for around $30 online....

this is a very simple solution but when that happened to me I found that my speakers cables were not not completely plugged in. give them a good push into the sockets and perhaps it will go away. otherwise, i am no help.

This darn hissing
I decided to call Altec Lansing tech support on the system I purchased with my pc last year. I'm one of those people that couldn't tell the diff between a $500 sys and a $2000 sys YET btw. Its the VS3121 sys. These speakers weren't expensive and they do sound great. And it's an interesting sys with a sub woof and a SFX device which is cool because it puts the sound, base, treble and sound effects buttons next to me instead of on the speakers. But when no sound is being played there is a constant hissing. And there is no on/off button! The only way to turn it off is to unplug it. I asked about the grounding issue and the tech replied that no the problem is the speakers are always in a standby mode. Now I know something else to check for next time I purchase or recommend speakers.
