Safe to flash DVD drive firmware over USB2?

I have NEC dvd burner that I'm using in a external case. I was just wondering if I could flash the firmware just using the USB connection? Would it be safer to hook it up to IDE? Plz help me, Its not really easy to take my computer apart at this point.

I've flashed my Plextor's firmware over Firewire, so I can't see anything wrong with that (PX-712A in external Firewire enclosure).

I have used USB in the past to flash my DVD, so I don't see a problem.
