Dual Monitor problem

i just hooked up a second monitor to my laptop, and when i open illustraor to work on something, once i click on the window of the picture, or any window for tools, they disapear...... for good, till i restart illustrator, what could my problem be?

it sounds like a video issue, but its pretty hard too tell by your description, are you just using the second monitor or are they streched screens? does this only happen on one monitor or both?
