Hot laptop power lead

This is a pretty strange problem, but where the power plugs into my laptop, the metal part of the connector is getting extremely hot whenever I am sat with the laptop on for any length of time.

It has caused the computer to instantly turn off a couple of times. I was thinking of just getting a new power lead, but would the same problem exist? I didn't want to jump into anything without getting advice first!

This has only started happening recently and I'm using a HP compaq nx9010. I don't suppose any other specs are needed are they? Has anyone else experienced anything similar?

Thanks in advance for any help.

I've had the same problem with mine. It may be a short in the cord.

could be a transformer malfuntion(the box on the cord) they normally get pretty warm but shouldent get hot enough to pwr down the machine. have you checked the hp support website? could be others have had this problem and they have a fix for it.

Sounds like a short somewhere in the cord, I'd replace the cord. Check warrenty status on it to see if you can get things fixed for free though

good luck,

Not long after I said about this the plastic around the connector actually melted! But I'm looking for a new one and all are £40+, didn't realise how expensive they were. Not happy, I'm outside the warranty by a week!
