Apple has unveiled a new mouse that has a 360-degree scroll wheel and four programmable buttons.

The Mighty Mouse's scroll ball is designed to let people scroll vertically, horizontally and even diagonally, the company said Tuesday. The scroll feature is suitable for viewing Web pages and photographs, as well as editing video and creating music, the company said.

Apple notes also that while the device has multibutton functionality, it can also work as a single-button mouse.

Two of the buttons are actually programmable touch sensors. People can click the upper right or left side of the mouse to access features like menus in Mac OS X and other applications.

Two other buttons can be activated by pressing the scroll ball and squeezing its sides. They can be programmed to get one-click access to 10.4.2 Tiger features like Spotlight and Dashboard, the company said.

The gizmo, priced at $49, has already begun shipping. It works with Mac OS X, Windows 2000 and Windows XP. It can be used with USB 1.1 and USB 2.0 ports, Apple said.

got it. Not too bad. the internal speaker needs a mute option.

The mouse is a one button 4 sensor mouse. The mouse still operates like the old apple mice, and its one big button, but the shell can detect the side used to click. I figured it would be touch sensitive, but instead you actually need to click.

The diagonal scrolling is ok. kinda choppy at times.

The side buttons will make a click noise when you press them (thanks to the speaker) I dont see myself using that too much.

Overall its pretty good, but not stellar. I expected more (like bluetooth). It still beats one button and my MS notebook optical.

Neat, but I doubt it's anywhere near as good as the logitech mice that go on sale for that price or lower now. Anyone else get to play with one?

IBM came out with mice with 360 scrollers a few years ago. Called the scrollpoint and scrollpoint pro. I don't know if they were Mac compatible though.

/me welcomes apple to 1980

I might be more interested if this wasn't the same lame flat mouse that gets to be a pain to use after 10 mins, the side buttons are a bitch to use, the scroller isn't perfect or even good just an interesting concept imo, and seriously now, ~$50 for essentially an unergonomic 3 button mouse? Come now, I may have been willing to pay a bit more for my powerbook than a competing windows laptop, but for a mouse that isn't better than a $15 logitech? Also since this is the 1980s that apple is stuck in I guess bringing back a ball to the mouse is the fad these days, just hate to see that thing get all grimed up. Guess it is a retro thing and the 80s are in fashion these days... Oh well at least they're admiting to the one button thing being a bit useless now.

I just hope they start shipping systems with that mouse and the new 'books get two buttons, ctrl-clicking is not cool.
