Chipmaker Withdraws Certain Chips from the Market, Cites Heatsink Issues

Intel Corp. is recalling a batch of chips from the market due to problems with heatsink supplied in the box. According to The Inquirer web-site, which has managed to obtain an official confirmation from Intel representatives, a small amount of Intel Pentium 4 Extreme Edition processors 3.73GHz is affected.

The batch number is 3502A770, for stock control unit (SKU) Intel Pentium 4 3.73GHz with 2MB cache and 1066MHz processor system bus. Intel Pentium 4 Extreme Edition product that runs at 3.73GHz is designed for extremely fast PCs used by enthusiasts and hobbyists.

The Intel Pentium Extreme Edition 3.73GHz microprocessor is based on the Prescott 2M core that brings 2MB L2 cache and features Intel Extended Memory 64 Technology, Enhanced Intel SpeedStep Technology (EIST) as well as Execute Disable Bit (EDB) capability that protects certain memory areas from malicious software provided that Windows XP SP2 operating system is used.

It is claimed that the batch of processors to be recalled is not large and is about a hundred of units. The batch has been given a returns number and Intel is providing full refunds on the product, according to the report.
