NVIDIA Broadens GeForce 7800 Family with $499 Offering

NVIDIA Corp. announced the newest member of the GeForce 7800 family that will offer the company’s leading-edge technology at more affordable price-point for broader audience. The new GeForce 7800 GT product is already available widely and has received positive reviews from the press.

“GeForce 7-based products have won over 50 awards and industry experts have praised NVIDIA for pioneering Shader Model 3.0, HDR lighting, and SLI technology—validating the GeForce 7 architecture as the must-have graphics technology for today and tomorrow’s PC gaming. By leveraging this highly scalable architecture, we are able to bring these new features to new price points and reach a wider audience,” stated Ujesh Desai, general manager of desktop GPUs at NVIDIA.

NVIDIA GeForce 7800 GT graphics card is powered by the G70 graphics processor with 20 pixel and 7 vertex processors enabled. By contrast, its more powerful predecessor – NVIDIA GeForce 7800 GTX – comes with G70 chip that features 24 and 8 pixel and vertex pipelines respectively. The newcomer also utilizes different print-circuit board (PCB) as well as lower-speed 256MB GDDR memory than the more powerful member of the GeForce 7800 GTX family.

Currently NVIDIA’s add-in-card partners supply GeForce 7800 GT graphics cards with chips clocked starting from 400MHz and memory clocked at 1000MHz, but as more graphics cards hit the market, manufacturers may increase frequencies of their GeForce 7800 GT products in order to boost competitiveness of their offerings.

Performance of NVIDIA GeForce 7800 GTX is generally higher compared to previous-generation graphics products powered by ATI and NVIDIA – the RADEON X850 XT Platinum Edition and the GeForce 6800 Ultra – especially in cases when eye-candy features, such as antialiasing and anisotropic filtering, are enabled. Additionally, the new-generation graphics solution boasts great speed in games that use a lot of pixel and vertex shaders for effects, according to performance measurements by X-bit labs.

An additional advantage the GeForce 7800-series brings over the predecessor is the so-called transparent antialiasing, which allows micro-geometry details to be displayed with much higher precision compared to traditional antialiasing.

X-bit labs believes that by launching the GeForce 7800 GT in mid-August NVIDIA solidifies its positions in the high-end market with the offering that comes at lower price point, sports richer feature-set and consumes less power and space in a PC compared to competing products.

NVIDIA GeForce 7800 GT GPU-based graphics cards are available immediately for a suggested retail price of $449 from the world’s leading add-in card makers, including: Albatron, Aopen, ASUS, Biostar, BFG Technologies, Chaintech, Citygate/Triple D, Elsa, Epsco, Evertop, EVGA, Gainward, Galaxy, Geniman, Gigabyte, Innovision, Leadtek, MSI, Palit, PNY Technologies, Point of View, Restech, Sigmacom, Sparkle Computer and XFX.

so.. what you're saying is..
for an extra $35, you can get an extra 4 pipelines, and an extra vertex shader, faster ram, and faster core frequencies.

yeah, that's 17% more pipelines for 7% more cash.

Seriously now, this isnt ridiculous at all, are they trying to make the 7800 series 'affordable' ???
By knocking off $35 yeah.. most people already do that with the $100 cards.

Nothing has to make sense with video cards at that pricepoint, since the only ppl that pay that for a video card are insane.
