i have sinned

i have been looking for a x86 based laptop for some time now, and last night i finally got one.

Office depot is clearing out some laptops, and I was able to get a Vaio B100BD. The clearance price was 612.01, which wasnt bad considering the system was a 1.7GHz Pentium M, 512MB PPC3200, Dual Layer burner, 60GB HD, and weighs 5 lbs.

So the cashier trys to sell me on the protection plan, and I politely refuse it. The out of nowhere he threw me a curve ball. He offers me the employee discount, so i was like "uh... sure". The kid didnt seem to now what he was doing at the register and seemed to be struggling figuring out how to do it. 2 other sales people came to help him, both asked what the discount was, and neither one tried to tell him he couldnt do it.

In the end, he sold me the laptop for $550 - $55 (10% disc) + 2 years protection, which was supposed to be 109.99, but rang up as $89.99-10% disc. I walked out the door with a brand spanking new vaio with extended warranty for less than I originally expected.

Now to blow away the windows install, install linux, and XP Pro.

The reason i had been looking is not because i am ditching OS X, but its because i hate virtual pc. I have a garmin GPS and a gtech performance meter that have windows only software. I was going to hold off until apple releases intel based laptops, but thats too far down the line.

Intel's only saving grace IS the Pentium-M processor -- which means that he did well with that one.

(More battery life than an equivalent Athlon system for sure, and VERy respectable performance).

But this proves that even an Apple user... can repent.

If there was a decent map/gps program for my mac I would probably get rid of my dell laptop. It kills me that no one has one out yet that is not internet based. And virtual PC is too slow. I used Mappoint Europe while I was traveling this summer and it would take 1-2 minutes to boot up. Too slow while you are standing on the street at night trying to figure out where the heck your hotel is.

Be careful... extra body oil and cheese droppings cause AMDs to overheat.
