Question

I have a soyo motherboard with a PIII 533 and PC100 memory. Do I have to switch to PC133 to overclock?

The memory has to be able to run at the bus speed of the mobo. PC100 memory is guaranteed to run on a bus speed up to 100Mhz, PC133 is guaranteed to run on a bus speed up to 133Mhz. So it all depends on what speeds you will be running your bus at. If you run your bus over 100Mhz you will probably need pc133 but not necessarily. Just like processors ram can be overclocked. It is possible that PC100 ram would run on say a 112Mhz bus, you just have to try it and see.

Well daft monkey the answer is maybe. Your PIII 533 cpu uses a 133MHz system bus speed. For you to overclock, your cpu would be running at speeds in excess of 133Mhz in terms of the system bus speed.

If you have a BX chipset motherboard you would need pc133 or pc150 memory to overclock. On a BX motherboard the memory runs at the same speed of the system bus.

But if you have a via apollo chipset or 815(e) chipsest motherboard you can run the memory at 100Mhz (at a lower speed) when using a system bus speed of 133Mhz. When overclocking your PC100 memory would then be running in excess of 100Mhz. As BADFISH said some not all PC100 memory can run at speeds at 100Mhz.

I've got a friend who overclocked on a CUSL2 with PC100...but it looks like it did limit him to some degree.
