i never thought i'd see the day. I saw some statistics somewhere that AMD outsold Intel in the desktop market during a quarter or the year or something... maybe dell is finally starting to feel the hurt.

I don't think it is that. I think it is that Intel has never been challenged by a major competitor in the desktop market. As such, their chips are overpriced. One only needs to look at their recent bungles while AMD has been more efficient, have better processors, and sell them at a lower price. It's about time Dell stopped screwing around with higher priced and relatively lesser performing processors.

Exactly.
I still see this as another example of Dell procrastinating with crap processors until they can finally own up to it and actually sell boxes with AMD chips. I'll not cross my fingers, Dell has bungled this one itself for years. ~Kyle

Dell will keep threatening Intel with switching to AMD so long as they can use it to get better prices. The day they can't is the day they switch to AMD. It's business and it's more economical for Dell to have one source of processors. If they could make more money selling exclusively AMD processors they would do that.
Don't count on them switching over any time soon though. |

The AMD 64-bit chips are becoming increasingly popular. Dell sees more and more begin sold by everyone except them. It's a simple economic decision: that pie is becoming bigger and bigger, and Dell sees that they are missing out on their slice.
