Playing MP3's on the stereo from PC for cheap?

I currently have my desktop hooked up to my stereo receiver with RCA cables, but want to use my laptop instead, which has a mediocre sound card.

Will a USB sounblaster live, or higher end USB sound card device have adequate preamplification to do the job? Any suggestions? I'm not an audiophile, just looking for clean sound.

I have 40gb of music on my external drive, and play it with Foobar2000.

Thanks!
