Question

Hi all, I am looking for a good video card for my friend's upgrade. I only want to buy him Nvidia, but the Geforce based cards seem to run in $200 range. I know the TNT2 is still a good chip and can be found for around $80, but he is reluctant to purchase 1+ year old technology. We are lookin around the $150 dollar range.
Thanks for any help.

I suppose my deal-hunting skills aren't as refined as you guys. If you don't mind me asking, where can I find such deals?

Try using such sites as http://www.pricewatch.com http://www.pricescan.com and http://www.techbargains.com

With some digging, you should be able to find a souped-up GeForce2 MX for a little over $140, which kinda irks me because I spent $280 on my GeForce 3D Prophet DDR-DVI 6 months ago.

yeah well, I spent 300 bucks on an SDR GeForce 9 months ago, so I'm pretty darn irked too.

That INNO model doesn't have as many perks as some, such as TV-out. I was referring to the more deluxe MXs.

Bah, tv-out. Has to be one of the most effective gimics that's really useless. . . The practicality of tv-out. . . Oh well I guess some like the braggin rights.

Definitely. The Voodoo3 2000 is kinda crappy these days. Even against a tnt2. You will notice a great performance increase in 2-D and especially in 3-D graphics.

Thanks for your help. There is a computer fair in my area tomorrow and I will check them out. If I don't see any for a good price, I will order one on that site. Has anyone ordered one from that site?

Can anyone shed some light on the differences between GeForce and 3dfx? Or are they different? Are there windows 2k considerations? What is the best cost:performance:'long term usability' card?

First of all, the manufacturers are different. LOL! Anyway, NVIDIA release updated drivers more often than 3DFX. Performance wise, GeForce2 GTS is more powerful than Voodoo5. I got my Creative Lab GeForce2 GTS for 220 bucks couple monthes ago. I'm extremely happy with the performance boost from voodoo2. Ha. If you have tight budget, I'd recommend GeForce2 MX for you. It's around 150 bucks and cheaper, but it does not sacrifice the performance. It keeps up with GeForce DDR most of the time. Get GeForce2 GTS if you can, if not, try MX. just my 2cent.

I also got my Creative Lbas GeForce 2 GTS a couple of months ago for $220 from buycomp after a coupon and am pleased with its performance.

As dodo90024 said the GeForce 2 MX is the best bang for the buck video card out wga22. Nvidia also has the best windows 2000 drivers.

NVDIA is king

3dfx is pretty much dead. The stocks are WAY down and it appears that 3dfx will soon be dumping the Glide API and implementing OpenGL. 3dfx: a company that is drowning in the sea that is the graphics accelerator market - paddling ferociously, short on air.
