IBM designs sub-30nm microchip

29.9 nanometres chip by IBM

IBM researchers have announced they have designed the first micro-chip with a width of only 29.9 nanometres. The new chip has one-third of the size of the 90nm circuits currently mass produced today.

"Our goal is to push optical lithography as far as we can so that the industry does not have to move to any expensive alternatives until absolutely necessary," said Dr Robert D Allen, manager of lithography materials at IBM's Almaden Research Centre.

"This result is the strongest evidence to date that the industry may have at least seven years of breathing room before any radical changes in chip-making techniques are needed."

Intel has started shipping 65nm chips last year and it is expected that the 65nm technology will become industry standard in the third quarter of 2006.

The IBM breakthrough will be announced at the SPIE Microlithography 2006 in San José today.

i sure hope they'd regret it. anyway, if they were going to switch, they should have switched to AMD, which has been on top for a long time. maybe back when they decided to switch, intel was better, but i doubt they'd started mass buying 2 years ago...
i like IBM. that blue ray computer is sweet. i wish i had one. i also wish i had 100 million dollars.
