Help: RAID5 server build, with ATX case, microBTX MB

There are 2 questions, 2nd is dependent on 1st:

1) can I use a ATX case, with micro BTX MB? If the MB is not compatible, any suggestion on a good RAID5 MB with Intel celeron support for the Enermax 10182 case?

2) I am thinking on using the below parts, am I missing anything? other than LCD, mouse/keyboard:

- Enermax entry server case
- Antec 500W power supply
- Intel Motherboard, based on spec, looks like RAID can be enable
also Intel support spec page
- CPU heatsink
- Celeron 2.8GHz
- NEC DL 16x8x6 DVD burner
- 1GB memory(512MB DDR2 PC2-5300 240-Pin DIMM)
- 4x 80mm case fan

TIA for the help

Good info here: http://www.hardwaresecrets.com/article/25

Due to these difference, BTX motherboards cannot be installed in ATX cases, neither can ATX motherboards be installed in BTX cases.

thank you for the quote. Looks like I need either a different MB, or a good server case to fit BTX.

CoolerMaster makes cases that are reversible from ATX to BTX... although i've heard that it is a pain in the arse to do the switch (which requires switching panel positions and whatnot).

It looks like the d945gnt mobo has what you are looking for.

http://www.intel.com/products/mother...5gnt/index.htm

Raid5, according to this page: http://www.intel.com/support/motherb...811.htm#levels

ATX form factor, and support for the celeron LGA775.

I've never used this board, so be sure to do some more research on your own.

I looked over the RAID Properties in the Intel spec page, with the "c" superscript, and looks like all ICH7R can enable RAID 5. So I got the ASUS P5LD2 Deluxe Socket T (LGA 775) Intel 945P ATX. Ao I think I will stay with the ATX route, since BTX is still fairly new.

Will see how this will work out.

thanks for the help

edit: checked on pricegrabber, the cost is like over $1k for the MB, guess the ASUS will have to work

That's a ten pack of mobos: BLKD945GNTLRX10U

Use froogle. It comes up with single unit results.

So it looks like you're going to be not using a raid-card??

From experience.. raid-systems use boatloads of power, unless this is going to be strictly a raid-server, i.e. it's just doing disk i/o, and not doing anything else really... I'd consider upping the power supply's output. I'd check to make sure this will not be a hinderance with any future upgrading.
From what I've seen you're planning on doing this with onboard raid controllers? This generally isnt a good idea, performance on the majority of these is far from great.
Raid-5 is gonna be somehwat killer on your cpu-resources too..

If you'd like any other suggestions on some of the finer points, PM me and I'd be glad to give some hints, raid-storage is what I'm good at

But questions on cases and etc.. I'm surely not the one to try to answer that stuff.. I've never had to build a raid-server from the ground up.
