I've seen it done with laptops before, so I'd hope there's a way to do it with the axim also

Do you have internet access in your phone already? I have done with with an Axim and nokia celphone & I-mate sp3i smartphone using bluetooth. I recently took the internet off and I found out a way to use free dial up networks and that works perfectly fine to check the mail etc.. Its quite slow but will get you the job done...

They are quite friendly over at Aximsite -- even to the newbies.

yeah, they seem to be a friendly bunch. i didn't even have to post, someone else took care of that for me. the answer? yes, if i want to pay $40/month. until two days ago it was free, but apparently sprint made a change and now it costs. i don't need it enough to pay, i just need to start plotting all the hot spots in my town.

good i'm with sprint too. Make sure you have vision, but be warned, they've started checking for people using their modems as phones. What phone do you have? Does your phone support bluetooth? some phones have phone-as-modem turned off, but there are hacks.

i've got an older non-bluetooth phone, but would upgrade if i can check my email via bluetooth without having to pay $40/month. i do have vision.

Well, you can either get a smartphone (treo, 6600, 6700) and check your mail on the phone itself, or you can get a normal phone with bluetooth and phone-as-modem functionality and check it that way.
Personally i have a treo 650 and its setup to download my mail every hour.
