Toshiba 50 inch plasma

The local Best Buy has a 50" plasma (Toshiba 50hp95) open box/display model for about $2000 after discounts and the like. Is it worth it to buy an open box/display model?

Opinions please.

Depends on how big the discount is over brand new? Open box still has a full warranty from the retailer, so depending on the discount (especially if it is over 50% of retail cost) then it might be a good deal.

Of course, I'd be sure to get the "extended warranty" on it.. just in case it does develop a problem.

I wouldn't buy a displayed/opened box plasma TV since I don't know how long it has been out there on the floor.

concerns

How long it was on the shelf was one of my concerns as I understand the screens have a useful life. I checked around and it says that TV was released in Oct 2005 so I figure it's been on the self for almost 8-9 months.

If it were me, I'd pass on it and get an LCD RP TV for the same price, quite new, that can display at least 720p

The Toshiba does do 720p. The glass is made by Panasonic. List price is $3000 and the best price check I could find is about $2500. Some sets have a way to find out how many hours it has been in use, but I do not know how to access it. May ask at the store (but they may not know either). Plasma life is pretty long these days. Panasonic claims 50,000 hours use until the brightness is half of what it was new.

and by then, there would be more HD plasmas that are better for pretty much the same or less price than what you got now.

its a GREAT value, but you MUST get the extended warranty. no ifs, ands or buts about it when it comes to open-box buys.
