buy a tv online or B&M?
i'm still interested in getting an LCD tv (either 32" or 37").
Are there any good online sites that offer good extended warranties? if so, how do they work? I can't just go to a B&M store for warranty-issues like best buy or circuit city, right? the only drawback about buying at B&M are paying taxes. do ya'll usually buy tvs online or at B&M stores?

Usually if you buy the extended warranty from Best Buy or Circuit City, you can just take it back to the store to get it taken care of.
When I bought my last TV, I definately got the in home service option, since the TV weighs like 200 pounds. May not be worth it for an LCD TV though. |

I have bought 4 LCDs (all 37" one for me, three for other family members)in the past year, all online 2 from beachcamera.com & 2 from buydig.com. All 4 were Syntax Olevia, search reviews online, majority have been positive. Let me say I also have a 37" Sharp Aquios bought locally. The pictures between the two are very similar, though the Sharp is better, but I the price difference is huge. I paid $2100 for the sharp, $1000 for the syntax. the syntax has an hd tuner with HDMI connection. Both of those sites were authorized dealers and offered in home warranties for cheap, no tax and at the time free shipping.

Online. Places like OneCall will have better prices than the B&M.
Warranties can purchased through 3rd parties online, often cheaper. Do a bit of research and you should be able to find plenty of options, probably at less cost than the package deals at the B&M guys.

How warranty service is handled could be important on something big like a TV. From a local store, you may have the option of taking it in to the store while online you will probably have to box it up and pay to ship it somewhere.

The online sites have in home options, too. And I'll repeat, I'd bet a paycheck it's cheaper than the in-store ones. KC, check it out...I think you'll be surprised.

I purchased my 56" Samsung DLP from Vanns.com. Got it within a week, free shipping, no tax, and the cheapest price I found anywhere, B&M or online. Check them out.

Here's the reason why... Depending on the size and type of TV... if it is one of those that you put in a spot and NEVER move it around again, they seem to work perfectly and last forever. For example... with my "now" old analog Toshiba 56" big screen TV... back in the day I was given the old "gloom and doom" story about how much it would cost me to repair/replace it if one of its internal parts ever went bad (i.e. the dreaded "gun" going out). So of course they talked me into buying a 5 year, $300 warranty with the TV just for "peace of mind". Well so far, those 5 years have passed and not a single problem has occurred with that TV. Looks perfect and even is on the edge of obsolesence due to HDTVs taking over (and the dreaded "2008/2009" switchover and whatnot...) More or less that TV has sat in the same place for the past 5 years and hasn't been jostled around other than its initial installation. It is watched almost daily... and yet no problems have occurred. Was I just "lucky"? Did I get the "magical" TV set that was built on a Wednesday instead of Monday or Friday? Either way, that $300 just got flushed "down the tubes" so to speak Just seems to me that consumer electronics with very few moving parts just are lasting much longer these days... and TVs of all things can last quite a long time before needing repair or replacement. I dunno... I kinda wish I had kept that $300 now and bought something else with it instead of that warranty... so on the next set I may or may not be hesistant to skip on the extended warranty service. I'm beginning to belive that those TVs that get moved around alot (say from room to room or from household to household) are the ones that are most vulnerable to breaking outright. But hey... then again, maybe I just got lucky on mine. ![]()

The inhouse warranty I got from the online stores, covered the 5 dead pixels I had on one set and the return shipping arrangements were made by them. On the other three, I have had no problems. I agree, I have pretty much given up buying locally. I go to the stores to check out the product, but everything I have bought has been online, from authorized dealers, but a huge savings. Onecall is an excellent site too. I bought my inwall Polk Audios from them. I also used carsdirect for car purchases, and costco I never knew costco did the same thing, but they just got me a sweet deal on a Lexus RX350.

for the warranties bought online (i.e. mack), how would in-house services work? Would the warranty include local technicians to call?
