Just Ordered a 50" Panasonic Plasma
It's the model 77 with the side firing speakers and the anti-glare coating. No 1080p but I was able to get it for $1600. I should get it this weekend.

ok, not to hijack the thread but I just bought the 50" 75U panny from sears, delivered yesterday (got it real cheap, $1200 after dealpass certs).
Two questions: 1. I've borrowed some DVD movies that say they are anamorphic 1.85 aspect ratio - i had the impression that this is the aspect ratio that will fill the entire screen without zoom(apocalypto and children of men - one of them even specifically stated it was formatted "especially for 16:9 TVs) but of course, this was not the case as i still saw black bars. Can someone set me straight on this issue - i.e. is there something i need to adjust on the panny/dvd player or should i just expect those black bars regardless? 2. I'm planning to subscribe to Cable HDTV - i assume that there are are no if, ands or buts when it comes to covering the entire screen with HDTV picture. 3. any other tips regarding getting the best out of this TV would be much appreciated. thanks. |

You're talking about black bars on the top and bottom right? Do the math. 16:9 does not equal 1.85:1. You see black bars because the aspect ratio of the movie is not always identical to the screen. As long as the picture is reaching the sides you are getting the biggest image possible for that widescreen movie. Here's a good crashcourse guide to widescreen media in general and what "Anamorphic Widescreen DVD" and "ehnanced for widescreen TVs" actually means: http://www.thedigitalbits.com/articl...hic/index.html The article contains very important knowledge that will ensure you fully enjoy and take advantage of your precious widescreen TV. Also, some sizes and resolutions aren't compatible with what you're lookking for. But that may be covered in the above article I'm too lazy to read right now. ![]() Great find, btw. But get a chair or sofa or something. A long movie in a collapsible chair's gonna hurt. |
