Home Theater Setup
I'm in the process of getting rid of all my stereo equipment. Nothing is all that fancy, but I will be sad to get rid of my Cerwin Vega E712s, and my Yamaha sub.
I'm looking for small satellite speakers, a sub and if possible a small 5:1 receiver/dvd player. I like the idea of the Bose Lifestyle systems (I know, don't buy Bose)because of the small receiver/DVD player. Are there any packages out there like that? I'm not sure what my budget is, I'm waiting on my stimulus check, my work bonus, and selling off my current stuff (which is not going too well).

If you are getting sattelites you may want to keep your sub. It can help with the lower frequencies the smaller speakers cannot produce- unless you intend to get a better one. Used electronics don't go for very much these days. I basically gave away most of mine when I upgraded. A friend at work got my old receiver and four speakers plus sub for $50. I was happy at that point just to get rid of them.
You could do things in stages- keep the speakers and upgrade just the receiver to a 5.1 (these days I would get one with HDMI). Or is it a size issue? I used to have a nice sat/ sub set from Cambridge Soundworks. I still use a pair of the speakers in my room. http://www.cambridgesoundworks.com/s...ry=hometheater

Yeah i'm worried about getting rid of my stuff. Although it appears i've managed to sell my receiver and cd player for $50, and my sub for $75. Now the hard part is getting rid of the big speakers. This is mostly a size issue than anything else. My wife hates the clutter of the receiver and cd player and the large speakers and when we move again it'd be nice to not have to pay as much to move them. |

Sattelites and a sub should work good for you then. Just be sure to listen to them to see if you like the way they sound. Cheap sattelites can sound muddy. The sub will be able to produce the lower frequencies which are less directionally noticable where they are coming from so it won't sound odd if they are coming from the corner.

Thanks for the help. I like the look of the Mirage Nanos. I'll have to find them somewhere around here.
Any recommendations on a small receiver type similar to the style of the Bose Lifestyle? |

I went and listened to a set of Mirage Nanostat 5s. They are pretty sweet. I'd like the Prestige set but for an extra $899 it's a bit much considering i'd like a new sub and receiver.
Crutchfield has a package of 5 Nanostats and an 75 watt 8inch sub for $599. It's a different 8inch sub that the one I heard at Best Buy. I believe that one was an 8 inch 400 watt sub. For that sub and a set of Nanos it would cost $900 at BB. Do I need a sub that'll do 400 watts? Or should I get the 75 watt sub and set for $599 and use the rest of the money on a receiver?TIA! |

Since you are looking at smaller set-ups you will probably not need a 400w sub. Another consideration since you are going with a satalite- sub setup is that you probably want to get a pretty good quality sub so that it sounds good with the speakers (on music or theater it will be producing the tones below what your sats are capable of) and not just how much it can make the room shake. I really like the sonic quality of my HSU sub. They only sell online. I have their STF 2 model. Goes for $350. You just saved $250 if you go that way. http://www.hsuresearch.com/subwoofers.html

the Mirage's really need a sub, and are really going to sound best with the Mirage sub in terms of balance. I dunno that you that need 400 watt sub; but I've not heard the 75watt one and would wonder just how good it actually sounded.
